Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple, reliable way to protect back teeth from cavities, especially in children and teens. The chewing surfaces of molars have natural grooves and pits where food and bacteria can settle. Even with good brushing, those deep areas can be hard to reach, which is where sealants come in.

A sealant is a thin, protective coating that we gently paint onto those chewing surfaces. The material flows into the tiny grooves, then hardens under a special light to form a smooth barrier. This helps block plaque and acids from getting into the enamel, lowering the risk of decay in those vulnerable spots. Placing sealants is painless and quick. We clean the teeth, prepare the surface so the sealant bonds well, dry the area, and apply the material. There is no drilling and no numbing. Most children handle the process easily, and adults who are prone to cavities or have deep grooves can benefit as well.

Sealants do not replace brushing, flossing, or fluoride, but they add another layer of protection. We check them at each regular visit to make sure they are still intact and top them up if needed. When they are well maintained, sealants can last for several years, carrying kids through their highest-risk cavity years.
